When a baby is born with Down Syndrome, or a 3-year-old contracts a debilitating disease, parents have an immediate need for support that continues for years. They need to know where to find help, how to manage the bureaucracy and how best to support their child. The Parent Education & Resource Center (PERC) in disAbility Connections offers reading materials, a toy-lending library, computer stations, advocacy, education and support services. PERC even hosts a social group for adults with disabilities called the Go-Gos. Our most recent project ”The Toy Talkers” takes toys into family homes and The Toy Talkers work with the parent and child on the importance of toys in child development and host family fun events at disAbility Connections.
The Parent Education & Resource Center is staffed by families who have children with disabilities, we have personal experience and are willing to share through our own successes and failures! We are willing to have those difficult discussions about guardianship, health care struggles, education, respite care needs, family relationships and long term planning for our children with disabilities.
PERC is a family planned project creating links to other families, peers and community resources that can assist in making the lives of individuals and their families easier and more fulfilling.
When a parent has a child with in the Special Education system it can be daunting. Knowing what to expect, how to write and set goals, what educational programs are available in our community, how do I know if my child qualifies for additional services and HELP...I don’t want to go to my IEP unprepared or alone…!
We have had hundreds of working events with special educators, we can provide 1 on 1 training for families through our MCHIGAN ALLIANCE FOR FAMILIES partnership. We also provide connections through local community organizations and programs including disAbility Connections, Family Support Groups, Children's Special Health Care Services, Early On, PAC & ISD, Support Groups, Ramp Project, Respite Services, Equipment Repair & Purchase, Social/Recreational Activities, the world through the Internet...and more!
