Volunteer Opportunity
Definitions
The following is a list of volunteer opportunities at disAbility
Connections and their corresponding duties/responsibilities:
Building Security Attendant: 2-8 hour commitment (depending of the
group using the conference room), responsible for letting the group in,
periodically making sure they have what they need, and locking the
building when finished.
Clerical Work: Tuesdays or Thursdays for 4-8 hours. Experience in
filing, typing,
and/or organizing office documents as well a answering a multiple-line
phone.
Computer input: Flexible weekly commitment of time for 2-4 hours
per week. Must have experience with Microsoft Access and Excel.
Correspondence: Periodic and flexible commitment of time for 2-4
hours weekly or monthly. Helping staff members with thank you letters and
other correspondence. Must have skills using Microsoft Word and Mail
Merge.
Equipment Repair/Maintenance: Occasional repair of Community Loan
Closet
equipment including wheel chairs, walkers, motorized scooters, etc. Must
have a general knowledge of loan closet items.
Fund Raising: Occasional and flexible commitment of time. Help in
solicitation of
funds for the operation of the organization. May include planning and
participation in special events and development of new events.
Gardening: Flexible and seasonal 1-2 hours Spring through Fall.
Help maintain the organization’s grounds including weeding, lawn mowing,
planting flowers in the spring, and tree/bush pruning.
Gift Buying (Christmas): Help choose appropriate gifts for the
Helping Friends
Together Club (a group of approx. 45 adults with developmental
disAbilities) and the Rotary Christmas party for approx. 30 children with
disAbilities from area schools.
Helping Friends Together Club: Group meets every other month for
approx. 3-6 hours. Help plan and implement recreational activities for the
group of approx. 45 adults with developmental disAbilities. May include
help with decorating, buying food, sending invitations and reminders,
helping with feeding and toileting, etc.
Library Cataloguing: Flexible commitment of time 1-2 hours weekly.
Organization of the resource library as well as the toy lending library.
Help in maintaining order of the items, sending or phoning reminders to
return items as well as cataloguing new items.
Loan Closet Organization and Inventory: Flexible time commitment of
1-2 hours weekly. Maintain order in the Community Loan Closet including
alphabetizing the files periodically, straightening items on shelves and
drawers, and inventorying items.
Mailings: Periodic help with the organization and implementation of
a bulk mailing including, labeling envelopes, folding letters, stuffing
and closing envelops.
MIS disAbility Transport: Usually a full day commitment of time
with options of Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday of the June, July and
August races. This is a new fundraiser for disAbility Connections at the
Michigan International Speedway in which we drive modified golf carts to
transport persons with disAbilities from the parking areas to their
closest gate. Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers
license.
One-to-One Activities: Flexible commitment of time of 1-2 hours as
needed to meet with an individual with special needs to provide
companionship (reading aloud, helping them write letters, taking them for
a walk, etc.) in their home or at the facility.
Telephoning: Periodic surveys or reminders of events or meetings by
phone. May be done at home or at the organization.
Residential Ramp building and tear-down: Usually a full day
commitment at a home in Jackson county. Duties include basic building
skills—no experience required. ~Also in need of additional individuals
with experience in engineering who can design ramps according to ADA
guidelines. Duties include site visit to assess ramp location and design,
list materials and guide volunteers in the completion of the ramp. Willing
to train!
~Also in need of individuals to assemble and take down aluminum ramps.
Sewing and Mending: Flexible and occasional sewing and mending for
persons with disAbilities.
Snow Plowing and Shoveling: Seasonal usually needed first thing in
the morning. Including plowing/blowing, shoveling, and spreading salt.
Seasonal Decorating: Organization of current decorations and
purchase or creation of original seasonal and event decorations.
Teach a Craft or Skill: Flexible commitment of time and energy. Do
you have a skill that you would like to share with children and adults
with disAbilities? Knitting, sewing, basket weaving, paper machete,
dancing, computer skills, etc.
