Save the Date! disAbility Awareness Dinner for October 15, 2008
The speaker will be Lacey Jean Davis. Dinner will be at the Gene Davis Center. Lacey is considered to be someone with significant disabilities. She has cerebral palsy, which affects her ability to speak and walk, and she relies on body language to communicate. She uses a wheelchair to move from one place to another. But the 23-year-old, who weighs in at around 70 pounds, also has an infectiously optimistic attitude. Lacey Jean owns an Italian Ice pushcart business—a very successful one. Beginning July 2007, in her first 3 months of operation, and working only on weekends, she grossed $12,000. She employs 2 high schools seniors paying them $8.50 per hour. See her website at http://laceysniceice.com/.

Supporting Each Other

It is a matter of having a serious disAbility, yet living independently, being productive and enjoying life.  It is families and individuals having a support network when the wheelchair breaks, the insurance company balks or transportation becomes a barrier.

disAbility Connections assists and advocates on behalf of individuals and families who deal with the effects of disease and disAbility.

Sometimes that means lending crutches or shower stools.  It means relieving parents who care for a child with disAbilities 24 hours a day.  It means giving a young adult a computer or equipping a person with an electronic device so that one finger or toe that he or she can move can be used to send messages to others for the very first time.

disAbility Connections got its start over 75 years ago.  It is a unique, non-profit agency that helps make Jackson County so special.  Funded primarily by local donations, serving only Jackson County residents, disAbility Connections is neighbors supporting neighbors.
